Video Editing Techniques
BackgroundLook at all the footage before editing. Remind yourself of the story line and how the elements will play into that message. Your creativity in editing should be there to serve the story, it should be transparent, avoid glitzomania.
Altering ToneEditing is where the tone of the video can be established. The tone of the story is reflected in the combination of elements that communicate a feeling about the video which should link directly to the storyline. Here are a few ways that tone can be created:
PacingPacing is how quickly the video moves from one shot to the next or from one scene to the next. Consider how the pacing of the video will influence the storyline. The video below talks more about pacing:

PurposeCreating good video is more than the technical skills, it involves creative and aesthetic skills as well; one is enhanced by the other. TransitionsBill Scott discusses transitions on his Blog at the link below. This is interesting reading, pay particular attention to the following sections "What Transitions Communicate" , "Purpose of Transitions", and "Guidelines for Transition Effects".
Pairing DownAt the end of the editing task it is useful to step back and evaluate each clip to see if it moves the story line along. If it doesn't meet that criteria then it should be removed.
Is this scene important to the story? if not then remove it. The process of slashing and burning is one of the most difficult tasks to undertake (likewise with the written word). However, the end result will be worth the struggle.
