Video editing is the art and craft of telling a well told story. termscomposting: combining clips or elements together on the same screen
compression codec: is the convention the editor uses to encode and reduce the size of the final video (e.g. H.264, mp4, etc.) (remember avoid compressing a video that has already been compressed in a significant way) crawl: - text or graphics moving across the screen horizontally cut: a change between shots - typically a switch to different angles or positions cut away: a shot that cuts away to something other than the subject - it might be a cut away to a shot that provides detail about the context. transitions: is the way in which video clips are combined or are put together chromakey: a way of masking colour to make it transparent (e.g. green screen) cross-fade: either video or audio clips fade out as another clip fades in dissolves: a video transition filter effect: apply a special effect to the video - sometimes this adding special colorization (e.g. sepia for an old or aged tone) in and out points: these are the spots where you mark the video to clip to begin and end. jumpcut: where cuts to a different camera angle are sudden and abrupt - sometimes even repeats the same action again lip synch: where the subject mouthes the words of the soundtrack out of synch: when the subject's audio is not lining up with the action; when the the mouth movements are out of synch with the voice montage: a sequence of shots assembled together to form a unifying piece picture in picture: putting tow or more video clips on the same screen at the same time - sometimes one small video clip on top of a larger video clip raw footage (dailies): the original video in its unedited form (generally you want the best possible quality) render: is the process for the editing application to composite elements or generate a preview of the video ripple edits: is an adjustment to a cut point of a clip on the timeline where the other clips are moved accordingly roll: text or graphics that move vertically - typically from the bottom to the top of the screen roll edits: is an adjustment to a cut point on the time but the subsequent clips are adjust in size to accommodate the change stabilization: a feature in some video editing software that will attempt to remove camera shake stinger: are short sounds and or music (3-8 sec) which are used to introduce or conclude a section of the video sound byte: a short recorded audio sequence sound effects: sounds added after the fact to enhance the meaning (e.g. sound of feet shuffling to communicate the idea of the subject moving) sound track: the track on the timeline which corresponds to audio, there may be more than one sound track timeline: is a bar which represents the time and is the basis for making editorial changes titling: the act of adding captions or titles to clips trimming: is the acting of removing parts from the beginning or end of a clip voiceover: putting voice into the sound track of a video - typically over B-roll wipe: a transition from one clip to the next where the fist clip moves off the screen to reveal the new clip. |
