Audio Recording
BackgroundObtaining quality sound is essential to a good video (Hollyn, 2013). Generally audio is used with video but can be used with other New Media elements or as a stand alone elment (e.g. background audio for a web site or an audio podcast).
Quality RecordingQuality audio may require an investment in quality hardware like a shotgun mic or lavaliere mic (lav). A shotgun mic can fit on the hot shoe of most video cameras and is used to capture directional sound. A lav mike clips on the subject and allows for wireless audio capture. In addition, there are cheap solutions like iPad apps that can be used in interview situations (e.g. Pro Audio to Go).

PurposeGood audio will make a poor video okay and a good video great.
Room ToneBe aware of background sounds that you will want to capture. Always ensure you have plenty of room tone or ambient sounds that can be used to overlay appropriate video. On site, explicitly schedule a time to obtain ambient sound.
Capture good sound! Monitoring Sound CaptureIt is important to monitor the volume and quality of the sound being captured. Splitter adapters will allow the audio capture device to connect a microphone and headset for monitoring sound. Most cameras can be connected with a headset.
