Breaking Rules
BackgroundGood designers are not constrained by rigid rules and theories. In other words, almost all principles can be overridden by other principles, it is all contextual.
Consider the following Figure as an example. This image violates the idea that elements need white space; normally one would want a gap between the words and the edge of the image. However, the designer opted to violate that principle so that the principle of dominance could take precedent. In this case the story suggests a focus on proportion which overrides competing design principles. |
PurposeDon't just break the rules because it is convenient. Rule breaking is fine if the rationale and purpose is clear.
