Asymmetrical Balance
BackgroundAsymmetrical design is when elements are not symmetrical. The balancing elements need not be identical. Asymmetrical balance is not a free for all, it still needs a clear sense of proportion and consistent rules.
The concept of balance ties to the concept of "white space". The figure below is an example of asymmetrical balance. A careful comparison of the left and right and top and bottom segments of the image reveal that there is no consistent symmetry but it has achieved balance because the weight of the structures are equivalent top to bottom, and right to left.

PurposeAsymmetrical design can be casual, fresh and energetic - can suggest things are off balance creating a sense of tension.
