Depth
BackgroundThe attribute of depth suggests a three dimensional aspect to displays. Since most displays are two dimensional, the best that can be achieved, is the illusion of three dimensions. For instance, the use of a drop shadow can be used to make the text look like it is coming off the page.
Photograph/video tip: Depth can be emphasized by using zoom on the lens - the wider the lens the more acute the depth and the further away distal objects appear, the higher the zoom (>mm) the closer the background layers will appear. Shadow DepthCheck out the following slideshow to see how shadow, texture and highlights provide a sense of depth (hover over image).
Shadows often distort over objects and also fade with distance, giving a sense of depth and perspective.
Establishing a light source If you are interested in composting different images together, ensure that the light sources are consistent by creating "light lines" (that create shadows) in the existing photo and make shadows in the overly image consistent with that. Consider the following example in the slideshow below: |
PurposeShadow, reflections, specular highlights, focus and texture can add depth. This can add realism. Juxtaposing of layers of depth can suggest tone, color and meaning.
Focal DepthFocus helps to communicate depth in the image below. Cameras can be set to achieve depth of field.
Depth of field can make the subject pop off the screen. Depth of field can be achieved after the fact in photo editing application. However, that approach doesn't always work well better to achieve that by using low aperture and a telephoto lens (longer focal length).
Reflection DepthReflections provide subtle depth information. Notice how the reflections of the flask on the ground plane makes the image looks three dimensional. Reflections also distort with distance and fade similar to shadows.
