3D Scanning
BackgroundThree dimensional scanning is done be a device that reads the surface of a physical object and brings that data into the computer. The computer then turns that data into a virtual 3D object in the computer that can be imported into 3D modelling applications and manipulated or sent to a 3D printer.
Types of ScannersThere are various approaches to scanning in 3D data:
Photogrammetry: cameras or smartphones can take photos from a variety of angles. The computer then calculates the 3D object from the photos. This also creates a UV map that has the color information as well. People and sculptures are good candidates.
Turntable: with this setup the there is a laser and turntable. The laser is beamed onto the object as it rotates around the turn table and the data is captured to the computer.
Handheld: these devices allow you to scan larger objects and even people:

PurposeScans make virtual records of physical objects that may not be around in the long run and allow viewers to interact with objects in the virtual world. For instance, in the medical field, scans are made of a person's amputated limb and then a prosthetic limb can be printed that is a perfect fit.
